Impact on Policy

Even if my policies were not always used to their full potential, they had an impact on the direction the US took. Around 1946 and 1947 when I wrote the Long Telegram was perhaps my biggest accomplishment. President Truman adopted the policy of containment and agreed that we could stop communism without military intervention. Unfortunately, as the Soviet Union became better armed, people lost confidence in containment and resorted to military build-up. After this point my ideas lost a lot of… Continue

Cold war era

I finished a very long telegram in 1946 about the policy that the US should adopt. The policy was called containment. The idea behind the policy was that communism can seem appealing to struggling countries; that it can fix their problems. The countries that had suffered as a result of war could be looking for any possible way to restore their prosperity. That is why the US should provide help for those in need to show everyone that, through democracy, we can rebuild and thrive. However, we did… Continue

My background in Foriegn Affairs

My name is George Kennan. Since my graduation from Princeton in 1925, I have decided to pursue a career in diplomacy. I'm interested in seeing other cultures and working to create better relations between nations. I have served in several European countries and was minister-counselor in Moscow. From my time in Moscow I have learned a great deal about the Soviet Union's goals and structure. What I Have seen is that the Soviet Union, and communism as a whole, has an expansionist nature. This… Continue

Accomplishments

One of the greatest challenges that I faced during the Cold War was trying to over throw the prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mossadegh. The reason that I was instructed to go after Mossadegh was because the British government. They had lost control over the Iranian oil fields that Mossadegh was now controlling. So Brittan turned to the units states for help. The reason that President Eisenhower and I decided to help the British was because we decided to take a more aggressive approach to… Continue

Mr. president, Now is the time to re-think our foreign policy because our military involvement in Korea is gaining little. We cannot hope to stop communist threats by sending our military to intervene in Asia. Instead we need to focus on the source.…

Senator, While I agree that the Soviet Union will try to aggressively spread their ideals, I don't believe that we should respond in a manner that would escalate the conflict. Communism thrives when there is political and economic turmoil. This…

Brother, I think that it is great that you are now head of the CIA. Thank you for your help taking down Muhammad Mossadegh. We could not have done it with the army because that would attract to much attention. So it was extremely helpful that you…

John Foster Dulles left a comment for George Kennan
Mr. Kennan, after reading the Long Telegram that you sent, I could not agree more with you and your thoughts about the soviets. I also think that the United States should be forceful in its actions but be careful not to start an all out war with the…
